Ubisoft Launches Decentralized Verification Network to Enable Seamless Blockchain Game Asset Transfers

Ubisoft, one of the gaming industry’s largest publishers, is taking a significant step toward realizing the long-standing vision of interoperable blockchain gaming. The company has partnered with LayerZero, a leading blockchain infrastructure provider, to create a Decentralized Verification Network (DVN) that allows in-game crypto assets—such as NFTs and tokens—to be transferred across different blockchains.

The new DVN is built using LayerZero’s omnichain messaging protocol, which enables interoperability between over 130 supported blockchains including Ethereum, Solana, and newer chains like Oasys and Immutable zkEVM. While LayerZero provides the technical foundation, Ubisoft is running its own nodes and clients to maintain control and reliability within its gaming ecosystem.

This initiative aims to address a core challenge in blockchain gaming: asset mobility. Traditionally, moving in-game items or currencies across blockchains has been slow, costly, and required users to navigate complex bridging processes. Ubisoft’s DVN changes that by leveraging LayerZero’s ONFT (Omnichain Non-Fungible Tokens) and OFT (Omnichain Fungible Tokens) standards, which convert assets in transit into interoperable tokens ready for use in other games or platforms.

A likely early use case will be Ubisoft’s own blockchain-based RPG, Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles, launched in late 2024 on the Oasys EVM blockchain. LayerZero previously stated its goal of making Champions Tactics “omnichain,” and this collaboration brings that vision much closer to reality.

Crucially, Ubisoft can now control the cost of asset transfers, with all fees made transparent to users upfront—eliminating the surprises often associated with traditional crypto bridges. The DVN model is also more user-friendly, sidestepping the need for multiple wallets or tokens across chains and reducing transfer times from days to minutes.

According to Bryan Pellegrino, CEO of LayerZero Labs, the future of crypto gaming lies in making infrastructure invisible to players. “Long term, the goal is that the user doesn’t think about a chain at all,” he said. “Their wallets are just dollar-denominated. Everything is abstracted in the backend.”

Ubisoft appears aligned with this vision. Nicolas Pouard, Vice President of Ubisoft’s Strategic Innovation Lab, has previously emphasized the company’s commitment to being chain-agnostic. This latest move strongly supports that direction, enabling future games—like the newly announced Might & Magic trading card game on Immutable’s zkEVM—to interact seamlessly with a wide range of blockchain ecosystems.

While it’s still unclear exactly which blockchains Ubisoft’s DVN will initially support, the potential for broader adoption is significant. By eliminating fragmentation and enhancing liquidity between gaming assets, Ubisoft and LayerZero are helping push blockchain gaming closer to mainstream usability.
