Thailand Becomes One of the First in Asia to Access OpenAI’s Sora App for AI Video Creation

Thailand has become one of the first countries in Asia to gain access to Sora, OpenAI’s new AI video generation app, giving Thai creators an early opportunity to explore the powerful creative tool. The rollout also extends to Vietnam and Taiwan, marking the app’s first major expansion outside North America.

Sora originally debuted in the United States and Canada in early September, quickly reaching more than one million downloads in under five days. According to Sora’s head, Bill Peebles, it achieved that milestone even faster than ChatGPT did at launch — despite initially requiring an invitation to join.

Now, users in Thailand can download Sora for free on iOS with no invite code required. Current use limits are described as “relatively generous,” though these may be adjusted in the future as more people come onboard.

Powered by Sora 2, the app allows users to generate entirely new videos, remix existing ones, and explore personalized content recommendations. It also includes a feature called Cameos, which lets users appear directly in scenes using their own likeness, verified through a quick identity check. The app supports Thai language input, making it accessible for local creators.

Early adopters have already embraced Cameos for their playful and interactive nature. Thai media personality Woody Milintachinda shared his experience, saying:

“Sora allows me to bring ideas to life in a way that immediately resonates with audiences. They can see and feel the story unfold. It’s given me a unique platform to connect with creators and storytellers around the world. With Sora, the creative possibilities truly feel limitless.”

Alongside the launch, OpenAI introduced Character Cameos, a feature that lets users turn nearly anything — from pets and drawings to original designs — into reusable characters. Users can set permissions for each character, deciding whether they remain private, shared with followers, or open to the wider Sora community. Once created, these characters can appear in future videos.

To celebrate Halloween, Sora has also released a seasonal “starter pack” featuring classic characters like Dracula, Frankenstein’s Monster, Ghost, Witch, and Jack-O’-Lantern.

OpenAI emphasized that Sora’s rollout in Thailand was developed “with responsibility in mind.” The app’s feed is designed to inspire creation rather than endless scrolling, surfacing content primarily from followed accounts. Users maintain control over their likeness, with the ability to remove access or take down any video featuring them.

Every Sora video includes a visible animated watermark and an invisible C2PA digital watermark, ensuring authenticity and preventing unauthorized reuse. For younger users, daily feed limits and stricter Cameo rules are in place, along with parent-controlled safety settings powered by ChatGPT.

With its blend of AI video generation, creative collaboration tools, and strong safety features, Sora’s launch in Thailand signals a new chapter for visual storytelling in Asia — one where technology and creativity come together to empower a new wave of digital creators.
