Tesla is doubling down on its China strategy by bringing in two homegrown artificial intelligence platforms—Deepseek and Doubao—to upgrade its in-car voice assistant. The move aims to give Chinese drivers a more natural, localized experience while ensuring compliance with local regulations.
A recently updated terms of service on Tesla’s official Chinese website revealed that the new voice assistant will let users manage navigation, adjust cabin temperature, control media, and even access real-time news—all hands-free.
Unlike in the U.S., where Tesla relies on its own AI model Grok, the company is turning to local tech partners for China. Doubao, developed by ByteDance (parent company of TikTok), will handle voice command processing, while Deepseek will focus on conversational capabilities. Both platforms are powered by ByteDance’s Volcano Engine cloud infrastructure.
The strategy reflects a growing trend among global automakers tailoring their technology for the Chinese market. Earlier this year, BMW announced it would integrate Alibaba’s QWen AI into its China-specific models, signaling that foreign carmakers see localization as key to staying competitive.
For Tesla, the timing is critical. Shipments from its Shanghai Gigafactory have fallen in six of the first seven months of 2025, with July alone down 8.4% year-on-year. Meanwhile, local players such as BYD and Geely—already leveraging AI assistants like Deepseek—are gaining market share.
By tapping Deepseek and Doubao, Tesla is signaling a willingness to adapt in the world’s largest EV market. Whether this shift is enough to help the automaker regain momentum in China remains to be seen, but it underscores how crucial AI-powered personalization has become in the race for the future of mobility.
