Singapore Invests $786 Million to Boost AI Research and Strengthen Global Competitiveness

Singapore is making a major push to cement its place as a leader in artificial intelligence, committing over S$1 billion (US$786 million) to public AI research over the next five years. The investment, announced by Digital Development and Information Minister Josephine Teo, is aimed at building up research centers, expanding AI capabilities, and developing local talent in a fast-moving global landscape.

This significant funding comes as countries worldwide compete to secure a foothold in the growing AI sector, which is increasingly shaped by leading players from the US and China. By accelerating its investment, Singapore aims to carve out a bigger role for itself as an AI research hub and ensure that its industries and workforce stay competitive.

The new funding will support a range of initiatives, including establishing research centers focused on artificial intelligence and enhancing the nation’s pipeline of skilled professionals. Minister Teo emphasized the importance of research as a driver of Singapore’s AI ambitions, stating that it will help maintain the country’s edge in innovation and technical expertise.

Singapore joins other nations—including South Korea, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Japan, Canada, and India—in launching national AI strategies. These countries are using targeted investments and initiatives to boost their domestic AI ecosystems, support local companies, and develop homegrown technologies.
