Riot Bitcoin Sales Hit $290M As Miners Shift Strategy

Riot Platforms sold $289.5 million worth of Bitcoin (BTC) in the first quarter of 2026, according to data. The scale of the sale signals a broader shift in capital allocation among publicly listed mining firms.

The company offloaded 3,778 BTC at an average price of $76,626 per coin, while retaining 15,680 BTC valued at roughly $1.1 billion. Of that total, 5,802 BTC remain restricted as collateral, limiting immediate liquidity despite the sizable treasury.

Are Bitcoin Miners Rotating Capital Into AI Infrastructure?

Riot’s move mirrors recent actions by peers reallocating resources toward artificial intelligence and high-performance computing. Marathon Digital (MARA) sold 15,133 BTC for approximately $1.1 billion in March, while Core Scientific liquidated 1,900 BTC earlier this year and indicated plans to exit holdings during the quarter.

The trend reflects a shift in miner economics following the 2024 halving, where reduced block rewards have pressured margins. Compared to Riot’s $289.5 million sale, MARA’s disposal was nearly four times larger, suggesting varying levels of urgency across operators.

Riot did not disclose a specific rationale for its sales, though it has previously signaled interest in AI infrastructure expansion. The Block reported that the company has been increasing its exposure to high-performance computing, aligning with industry efforts to diversify revenue beyond mining.

Operational data shows mixed performance trends. Riot mined 1,473 BTC in Q1, down 4% year over year, even as its deployed hashrate rose 26% to 42.5 exahashes per second and average operating hashrate increased 23% to 36.4 EH/s.

Still, Riot’s balance sheet remains supported by prior growth, with annual revenue reaching $647.4 million in 2025, up 71.8% year over year. The next catalyst will be whether continued BTC sales accelerate across the sector as miners fund compute expansion and adapt to post-halving economics.
