Polygon’s Heimdall v2 Upgrade Set for July 10 to Slash Finality Time and Modernize Network

Polygon is gearing up for a major upgrade to its proof-of-stake (PoS) network, with the highly anticipated Heimdall v2 migration scheduled to take place on July 10. The overhaul aims to significantly reduce transaction finality times to around five seconds while also addressing legacy technical issues that date back to the early development phase.

The upgrade has sparked investor interest. Polygon’s native token, POL, jumped 6.2% in the past 24 hours, outperforming the broader crypto market. According to GMCI 30 index—which tracks the top 30 cryptocurrencies—marketwide gains stood at just 1.7% over the same period. POL was trading at $0.20 at the time of reporting, with a market capitalization of $1.8 billion.

Described as “the most technically complex hard fork Polygon PoS has seen since its launch in 2020” by Polygon Foundation CEO Sandeep Nailwal, the Heimdall v2 upgrade is a key step in streamlining the network. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Nailwal emphasized the importance of shedding outdated code and systems from 2018–2019, enabling Polygon to improve performance and reduce latency.

We’ve been on a shipping spree—and next up is Polygon PoS’s consensus layer, Heimdall v2, landing 10 July 2025.
‼️ This is the most technically complex hard-fork Polygon PoS has seen since it's launch in 2020 ‼️
What’s changing?
1. Heimdall sheds all…
The upgrade process on the mainnet is expected to take about 30 minutes, not including any additional time for troubleshooting or preparation. Nailwal noted that most validators have already implemented the upgrade. For those who haven’t, he encouraged early testing and open communication to help resolve any potential issues quickly.
The upgrade reinforces Polygon’s ongoing push to enhance scalability and speed, positioning it as a more robust platform for developers and users alike.

With the Heimdall v2 upgrade, Polygon is not just tightening its performance but also turning the page on technical baggage from its earlier days. As the July 10 migration approaches, all eyes are on the network to see how this complex but promising step will shape its future.
