Tokyo-based game developer Gumi Inc. has made a bold bet on digital assets, purchasing 6,008,857 XRP worth around $17 million. The move aligns the company more closely with its parent SBI Holdings, which has long championed Ripple and cross-border payment solutions.
Following the announcement, Gumi’s stock price jumped nearly 6% to ¥640 on Monday, underscoring investor enthusiasm for the firm’s blockchain pivot.
A Dual Crypto Strategy: Bitcoin + XRP
This isn’t Gumi’s first crypto play. Earlier in 2025, the company bought $6.6 million in Bitcoin, signaling that it views digital assets as a long-term strategic pillar rather than short-term speculation.
Gumi describes its approach as a two-pillar strategy:
- Bitcoin serves as a universal store of value and a potential source of staking returns.
- XRP is positioned as a utility token for financial services, particularly in remittances and liquidity solutions.

“The rising demand for XRP in financial infrastructure makes it a key long-term asset,” the company explained. “By combining Bitcoin’s global reach with XRP’s real-world use, we aim to diversify business income.”
Ties to SBI and Ripple
The investment reflects more than just balance sheet diversification. Gumi explicitly tied the purchase to SBI Holdings’ international payments and liquidity initiatives, which are closely linked to Ripple’s XRP ecosystem.
SBI has been one of XRP’s most consistent backers in Asia, pushing its adoption in remittances and settlement services. By aligning with SBI’s strategy, Gumi is positioning itself as part of a broader push to integrate blockchain into financial infrastructure.
Risks and Opportunities
While Gumi insists the XRP investment isn’t speculative, risks remain. XRP continues to face regulatory uncertainty in the U.S., where its status as a security has been challenged by the SEC. Global adoption also depends on how regulators in each jurisdiction treat the token.
That said, Japan’s regulatory environment has been more favorable to XRP, giving companies like Gumi and SBI a strategic advantage.
Why It Matters
For a gaming company to put millions into XRP is unusual — but it highlights a broader shift. Non-financial firms are beginning to treat crypto not just as a hedge or investment, but as a core part of their operations and treasury strategies.
By doubling down on Bitcoin and XRP, Gumi isn’t just speculating on prices — it’s betting that blockchain infrastructure will underpin the future of payments and corporate finance.
