Ethereum Foundation Unveils New Leadership and Board Structure to Strengthen Ecosystem Growth

In a major organizational update, the Ethereum Foundation has officially announced a reshaped leadership and board structure aimed at enhancing its strategic direction and support for the broader Ethereum ecosystem.

In a forum post published Monday, the Foundation introduced Hsiao-Wei Wang and Tomasz K. Stańczak as its new Co-Executive Directors. This dual appointment, described as "unconventional" by the Foundation itself, is part of a broader initiative to refine governance, ensure a balanced execution of its mission, and foster deeper technical development across the Ethereum network.

"Appointing Tomasz and Hsiao-Wei as Co-EDs enables a complementary leadership approach during a critical period for Ethereum and the Foundation," the announcement noted.

The leadership change comes after a wave of community criticism, centered on calls for greater transparency and concerns that Ethereum was falling behind in a rapidly evolving blockchain landscape. In response, the Foundation has restructured its internal framework to meet these challenges head-on.

Former Executive Director Aya Miyaguchi, who faced particular scrutiny regarding operational oversight, has transitioned into a newly created role as President. Many in the Ethereum community had advocated for leadership with a stronger technical background—an expectation the Foundation seems keen to meet with this reshuffle.

Stańczak, who will continue his work with blockchain infrastructure firm Nethermind, is expected to hold the Co-Executive Director role for two years. While Hsiao-Wei Wang’s term details were not disclosed, she is set to act as a key bridge between the Foundation’s board and its management team.

Over the next year, the new leadership duo will prioritize several critical areas: scaling the Ethereum mainnet and enhancing blob storage for transactions, improving user experience (UX) at both the Layer 1 and Layer 2 levels, and amplifying the visibility of Ethereum applications and developers, especially at events like Devcon.

"We recognize the need to accelerate the journey for developers, founders, and institutions in building on and adopting Ethereum," Wang and Stańczak stated.

The Foundation also announced additional board updates. Josh Stark and Bastian Aue have been appointed as board "co-stewards." Aue will oversee talent acquisition and training, while Stark, formerly with Ledger Labs, will drive project execution, communications, and marketing initiatives.

"The Ethereum Foundation board acts like a security council — safeguarding the spirit of EF and ensuring strategic alignment with its founding values," the Foundation explained.

Vitalik Buterin, Ethereum’s co-founder, remains a vital part of the board, providing ongoing technical and intellectual guidance. In a blog post co-authored with Miyaguchi, Buterin emphasized the Foundation’s future goals: expanding Ethereum’s user base and reinforcing the resilience of its technical and social infrastructure.

They stressed that Ethereum’s growth should be grounded in its core principles: censorship resistance, open-source development, privacy, and security.
