Ethereum Foundation Exec Josh Stark Steps Down After Five Years

Josh Stark will exit the Ethereum Foundation (EF) after five years, marking another leadership change during a period of internal restructuring. The departure removes one of the organization’s most visible public figures as it refocuses on scaling and protocol priorities.

Stark said Thursday he will step down at the end of April, closing a tenure that began in 2019 within EF’s special projects team. He later moved into a senior leadership role, working alongside EF President Aya Miyaguchi and founder Vitalik Buterin, as well as co-executive directors Hsiao-Wei Wang and Bastian Aue.

What Does Stark’s Exit Signal For Ethereum’s Roadmap?

The exit comes as EF recalibrates its organizational structure and technical direction, with renewed emphasis on mainnet scaling and core cypherpunk principles such as censorship resistance and privacy. The shift follows multiple leadership changes, including Tomasz K. Stańczak stepping down as co-executive director in February after less than a year.

Stark played a central stewardship role across several major milestones, including Ethereum’s transition to proof-of-stake via The Merge and subsequent upgrades such as Dencun, Fusaka, and Pectra. But, his influence extended beyond engineering coordination into communications, where he helped articulate Ethereum’s long-term positioning and scaling strategy.

Ethereum Foundation’s Josh Stark highlights ETH’s ‘hardness’ as it hits 3-year low against Bitcoin
The blog post by Josh Stark comes amid the pair ETH/BTC hitting its lowest point since April 2021, at 0.03493 BTC.
“Working for Ethereum at the Ethereum Foundation has been a great honour,” Stark said in a post on X, adding that he plans to take a break before considering future roles.

He recently co-authored a strategic blog outlining Ethereum’s scaling ambitions and its evolving relationship with Layer 2 networks.

Still, the timing raises questions about continuity as EF advances initiatives like its Trillion Dollar Security program and broader ecosystem coordination. With another senior contributor, Trent Van Epps, also departing to focus on Protocol Guild, attention now turns to how EF maintains execution momentum amid leadership turnover.
