Elon Musk’s X and xAI have filed a lawsuit against Apple and OpenAI, accusing the companies of forming an unlawful monopoly in the fast-growing artificial intelligence sector. The complaint, lodged in a Texas federal court, centers on Apple’s recent deal to integrate OpenAI’s ChatGPT directly into the iPhone operating system.

According to the filing, the partnership gives ChatGPT exclusive control over key iPhone functions, effectively sidelining rival assistants such as xAI’s Grok. The lawsuit describes the arrangement as “two monopolists joining forces to ensure their continued dominance,” and argues it denies users the ability to choose among competing AI platforms.
Data at the Heart of the Dispute
The lawsuit claims the real advantage lies not just in iPhone integration but in the vast stream of user data generated by millions of daily prompts. Generative AI systems improve with usage, creating a feedback loop that strengthens performance. By granting ChatGPT privileged access to billions of potential queries, the filing alleges, Apple and OpenAI have built an impenetrable moat that keeps competitors from gathering the data they need to evolve.
So valuable is this data, the complaint states, that OpenAI agreed to provide Apple its technology for free, treating the user information as equal—or even greater—in value than direct payments.
Apple’s Strategic Motives
The lawsuit also argues that Apple’s decision is motivated by broader fears of disruption from “super apps.” These all-in-one platforms, such as the one X is developing, combine messaging, payments, social networking, and AI services into a single ecosystem. If such apps take hold, the complaint suggests, they could diminish the importance of high-end smartphones, undermining Apple’s lucrative hardware business.
Citing an internal remark from an Apple manager, the lawsuit describes the company’s concern that super apps could be akin to “letting the barbarians in at the gate.”
Alleged App Store Bias
Beyond the integration deal, X and xAI accuse Apple of manipulating its App Store to disadvantage rivals. The complaint alleges that Grok, xAI’s chatbot, has been excluded from Apple’s “Must-Have Apps” list and subjected to delayed update approvals, while ChatGPT receives prime visibility. These actions, the companies argue, stifle competition and harm consumers through reduced innovation, fewer choices, and potentially higher costs.

The Stakes
The lawsuit seeks to dismantle what it describes as an anti-competitive arrangement and recover billions of dollars in damages tied to lost market opportunities. More broadly, it highlights growing concerns over concentration of power in the AI industry, where data access and platform integration can make or break competitors.
