Chinese AI startup Zhipu, now operating internationally as Z.ai, is set to release its most advanced open-source model yet—GLM-4.5. The new model, expected as early as Monday, marks the company’s latest move to position itself as a serious global competitor to OpenAI.
GLM-4.5 is an upgrade to Zhipu’s flagship language model and part of a broader push by Chinese tech firms to expand access to AI through open-source offerings. In recent months, other startups like Moonshot and StepFun have also released their own non-proprietary AI models, signaling a shift toward greater transparency and collaboration in the space.
While Zhipu has not officially commented on the release, sources familiar with the plan confirmed the model’s imminent launch. The move highlights growing momentum within China's AI sector as companies aim to both contribute to global AI development and shape emerging standards.
Zhipu is also reportedly weighing a change in its IPO plans, considering a move from mainland China to Hong Kong. Backed by tech giants Alibaba and Tencent, the firm is working with advisers on a potential $300 million share sale, according to Bloomberg.
As the global race in generative AI intensifies, Zhipu’s open-source strategy could help it stand out—not just as a competitor, but as a collaborator in the future of artificial intelligence.
