Akash Network Plans Migration from Cosmos Chain, Launches Search for New Blockchain Home

Akash Network, the decentralized computing platform behind a marketplace for GPU and cloud capacity, is preparing a major shift in its infrastructure. Founder Greg Osuri announced that the project will deprecate its Cosmos SDK–based blockchain and migrate to a new network—one capable of “securing Akash” for its next phase of growth.

While the new destination chain hasn’t been selected, Osuri confirmed in a post on X that the team is seeking a platform offering “strong security, a high-quality community, deep liquidity, and exciting growth.” The new chain, he added, will remain compatible with the Inter-Blockchain Communication (IBC) protocol to preserve interoperability with the wider ecosystem.

A Major Move for a DePIN Leader

Akash, originally launched as a Cosmos appchain, operates a decentralized marketplace that connects buyers of compute power—including AI developers—with independent hardware providers. The network gained significant traction in 2023 when it introduced Nvidia GPU support through its Mainnet 6 upgrade, offering cost-efficient alternatives to centralized cloud providers.

Deprecating its current chain marks one of the most significant architectural shifts for a decentralized physical infrastructure network (DePIN). According to Osuri, the goal is to evolve beyond traditional staking models and move toward “something superior,” hinting at a reimagined approach to network security and participation.

GMCI DePIN

Osuri also named Solana as a “strong contender” among potential destinations, while noting that the evaluation process will be public and deliberate. An official request for proposals (RFP) inviting blockchain foundations to participate will be released “in the coming weeks.”

Interoperability and Scale at the Core

Maintaining seamless integrations with existing tools—such as Osmosis and Keplr—will be a key focus to ensure user continuity. Osuri emphasized that any migration will preserve core workflows and liquidity bridges critical to the Akash ecosystem.

The search for a new home aligns with broader trends in decentralized infrastructure. DePIN Report 2025 highlights web3 cloud and AI compute as among the fastest-growing segments of the sector, now valued in the billions. However, the report also points to ongoing challenges such as hardware access, scalability, and regulatory complexity across jurisdictions.

Ultimately, interoperability and dependable throughput may determine which networks become the go-to platforms for decentralized AI and cloud workloads—a space where Akash aims to remain a leading player.

Looking Ahead

Akash has not set a specific timeline for the migration. Osuri assured the community that the process will be transparent and community-driven, with open discussions about trade-offs and long-term implications before any final decision is made.

As demand for decentralized compute continues to surge, Akash’s move could redefine its role in the evolving DePIN landscape—and potentially set new standards for how decentralized infrastructure networks evolve for security, scalability, and global participation.
